Cinco de Mayo!
Happy Cinco de Mayo, everyone! We briefly thought about going out for Mexican, but the girls weren't really into it and the weather is a little stormy so we're having a Tuesday night at home instead (with Corona). Sometimes any excuse to celebrate is worth it.
I can hardly believe it's already May. One thing I've noticed about Texas is over the years is that May Day is a completely foreign concept. Nobody who I've met who grew up here ever left May baskets on porches. I guess it has Scandinavian roots, which explains why it's more of a northern tradition, and I enjoyed seeing FB photos last Friday of people delivering their goodies.
Steve was in KCMO for a long weekend to celebrate the NFL draft with some buddies, so the girls and I had the weekend to ourselves. On Friday evening, a friend from Sara's class, Summer, came over to play for the first time. They mostly played school (which was my fave growing up) and they even let Emma play with them. She did whatever they told her to do; she was just happy to be included. Saturday afternoon, that same friend had a soccer game so we walked to the park to watch it. Sara ended up going home with Summer afterwards to play, and not long after I got a text from Summer's mom saying the girls wanted to have a sleepover. I was hesitant because Sara had never had a sleepover, but since they live just around the corner and the girls were playing so well together, I agreed. Emma and I walked some overnight stuff to Sara, and while Emma was sad to leave Sara behind, Sara was not the least bit upset about us going on our way. Summer's parents took them out to pizza, to the movies, and then for ice cream. Sara made it through the night and the girls had a great time ... pretty good first sleep over, I'd say!
It's Teacher Appreciation Week. I hope you are doing something nice for your kids' teachers ... they deserve it. Small gestures of thanks go a long way for the amazing people who dedicate their lives to helping children achieve. George Lucas said, "Education is the single most important job in the human race." I couldn't agree more.
We've decided that we need to move bedtimes up - which is so hard with the later sunset - but it's necessary and makes our mornings better. So with that said, time to sign off for now!

Three Things on Thursday
1. I'm sure you've heard about the Atlanta cheating scandal, and the educators who are going to prison because of it. If you haven't, here it is in short: a handful of teachers and administrators changed answers on state standardized tests taken by students over a number of years, resulting in district ratings that sky-rocketed, and of course drew attention. And now these people are going to prison. Obviously what they did was premeditated and calculated. They knew it was wrong and they did it anyway. I could never condone something like that. But they're going to prison. I can see the conversations now, "What are you in for?" "Cheating." Really? I'm not saying that the actions taken by these school district employees were okay by any measure, but I certainly think they should stir some conversations about the impact of standardized testing on our public schools, the students, and the staff. Especially in a large metropolitan district such as Atlanta, where more kids tend to come from poverty and scores tend to be lower, the pressure for teachers to prove their merit through student test scores is high. The fact that capable, smart people felt the need to succumb to such scandal over something as silly as test scores speaks volumes about the state of public education right now. And you all know that I am totally pro public education ... I believe in it wholeheartedly. Unfortunately, many of the people who make the most impactful decisions about how and what we teach and test lack real classroom teaching experience. Right now there are rapists, murderers, multi-offense drunk drivers, and other serious criminals living free, even after arrests and prosecution. Meanwhile, a group of educators is behind bars for cheating on tests. I know I've skipped a lot of important details, but to me, the big facts remain the same. Something's gotta give.
2. This week I've hit my own personal pinnacle of terrible parenting. On Monday, the pediatrician's office called to remind me that Sara turned six in December and wanted to know whether I planned to make an appointment for her annual check-up. How embarrassing. I took her in on Tuesday and spent most of the appointment time telling the nurse and doctor that I'm really not a neglectful parent. Then yesterday morning, I totally came unglued. Emma was in rare form - absolute defiance, huge tantrum. I think it started over choosing her outfit (I always put out two choices) before it turned into anything and everything else, but I honestly can't remember because I was so close to over the edge. I was so, so frustrated with her. I finally managed to get her in the car to go to school, and carried her inside still screaming. I could barely say anything other than "good luck" as I handed Emma over to her teacher, who was surprised to see her come in so upset. But after I turned away and shut the door, I looked back through the window at her tiny, sad little face and instantly started hoping that she wouldn't remember how terribly I'd dealt with her behavior earlier in the morning. I'm the adult ... I'm supposed to maintain my patience and composure. I told myself this as I walked out of the daycare and back to my car, and then I cried the whole way to work. I felt terrible for the rest of the day, and vowed to try harder to be a better parent. I can't afford to screw this up.
3. Two of my college BFFs are coming to town this weekend. Brooke and Leigh fly in tomorrow evening from Kansas City and Milwaukee, respectively. I'm looking so forward to a weekend with true friends who are always just what I need when I need them. I can't wait for them to get here. Laughter, gossip, and wine will be enjoyed by all.
