We are having growing pains in our home, and I'm not sure whose are the worst, but for the sake of my pity party, I'll say mine rank right up there. In the last couple of weeks, Emma has had multiple behavior issues at school. One day they even called me while she was in the office, and I sure did have them put her on the phone so I could give it to her straight. She "yes, ma'am"-ed me until I told her to scoot herself on back to class with better behavior. On that particular day, she and a friend refused to come inside from recess. Once the teachers were able to get them in, they ran out of the classroom and down the hall.
Between the lesser behaviors such as running around the classroom, not following basic directions, and telling her teacher "no", Emma's antic this week takes the cake. On Tuesday when it was time to come in from recess, all of the kids but Emma and a friend were lined up following directions. Emma was still on the playground, up on a bridge that connects two structures. Not only would she not come down, she and her friend took off their clothes - ALL OF THEIR CLOTHES - threw them over the side, and danced around laughing. The office staff had to come intervene.
Everyone I've shared this story with has laughed hysterically. I get that it's a little funny, but all I can picture is my daughter two or three years from now pulling this sort of stunt in elementary school. Not funny. Not even a little bit. It takes a lot of staff to manage this sort of situation. And then you have the angry parents of the kids who had to see the naked one calling to inquire about what steps will be taken to ensure this doesn't happen again. Plus it's chaotic, and totally compromises the integrity of the learning environment. I sure hope she can get this out of her system, but I happen to know some special friends who come to kinder with behaviors like this still in their little systems ... and I'm wondering if my Emma will be one of them.
I don't expect my kids to be perfect; we all have our days, of course. But blatantly disrespectful? Becoming a safety hazard? Stripping? Um ... no. Not in the plans. As someone who routinely meets with parents about their child's behavior, the last few weeks have been - to say the very least - humbling. They've been incredibly frustrating, and at times I certainly haven't been my best self as a parent or a person, but man am I humbled.
Yesterday someone randomly asked me if we plan to have any more kids. HA-HA-HA!

The longest month.
What is it about February? If you've ever worked in a school, you've likely heard teachers grumble about how it's the never-ending month. I rejected it for the longest because how could my birthday month be so terrible? But it's true. The other day, even Sara asked me, "How does the month with the smallest number of days feel like the longest month e-v-e-r?" And although I've heard mattress stores advertise the benefits of an extra night's sleep this year in February, I think that is just a fancy way of saying that we have to wake up and make it through one extra day in the longest month this year.
There's not one thing in particular that has made our month drag on. In fact, it's been really busy ... all the more reason it should feel like it's flying. Both girls are in soccer and swimming, and Sara is in Daisies, which she is loving. It's keeping us busy, and my brain feels scattered. Between events, I'm constantly refereeing between arguing sisters and running errands where I always forget at least two things I really needed in the first place. And also trying to keep track of work stuff, making poor attempts at providing decent meals, and keeping my house at a semi-acceptable level of clean. I think these are all the things I was warned about for years, and now it's hitting. Like a ton of bricks.
Of course the girls did enjoy their school Valentine's parties, and we celebrated with our traditional heart-shaped pizza. That was a nice mid-month pick-me-up. There have been a few other highlights, too...
Steve is out of town enjoying a guys' weekend in Jackson Hole, and tomorrow the girls and I will go from game to swimming to game. And since I won't be fooled into thinking there will actually be naps afterwards, I'm hopeful there will at least be some time to breath. It's worth it, of course, because I love seeing the girls being active and having fun, which I try to remind myself of when I'm busy getting to the bottom of a fight over something like the yellow marker that smells like popcorn. And seriously, thank goodness for wine.
The shining light at the end of this February tunnel is the Florida trip the girls and I are taking in just over a week. We're so excited to visit G & G and get to the beach, even if I'm in last year's swimsuit because there's no way I'll be finding time to shop and try on between now and then. I do plan to take five minutes to paint my toe nails before we leave, but besides that, it will be crazy life as usual. By the time we board the plane, the longest month in yet another fleeting year will be behind us, and I'll be focusing on soaking up the moments (you know, as long as two certain girls aren't going toe to toe over the window seat ...).
