Book Talk

Need a book for the long weekend?  Look no further.
My sister loaned me her copy of Labor Day.  Maybe you've seen the movie; I don't plan to, but I did enjoy the book.  It's the story of a reclusive single mother and her teenage son who find themselves welcoming a prison escapee into their home.  It's fairly predictable, but certainly a perfect beach or poolside read.
In What Alice Forgot, Alice falls and hits her head at the gym, and although she's about to turn 40, she can't remember anything that has happened in the last ten years.  She believes she's still 29 and pregnant with her first child.  As the truths of her current reality are revealed to her, she struggles with wanting to remember and wanting to continue to forget.  I couldn't put this one down.
I found How Evan Broke His Head for $2.99 on Amazon and bought it because I was already a fan of the author.  Evan is a 31-year-old rock star wannabe who meets his teenage son for the first time at his ex-girlfriend's funeral.  The frustrating, heartbreaking, and enduring story of how they get to know each other - and themselves - unfolds.  I highly recommend.
